BSP Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC)
The BSP Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) was successfully conducted on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at The Big House (beside Kuilans) in Juna Subdivision, Matina, Davao City. The course brought together scouts and parents eager to learn the fundamentals of safe, responsible, and enjoyable mountaineering.
The day began with an orientation on the basics of hiking and mountaineering, setting a strong foundation before moving into hands-on activities. Participants were introduced to the importance of preparation, discipline, and teamworkโkey values essential for outdoor adventures.
After the introductory session, the children were grouped into three teams and rotated through a series of practical activity stations. Each station focused on essential mountaineering skills that would later be applied in actual hiking conditions.
One station covered camp cooking, where participants learned basic food preparation and proper burner operation while observing safety and cleanliness. Another station focused on tent pitching, teaching proper setup techniques and the importance of shelter selection and camp management. The third station emphasized knot tying and basic bandaging, helping learners understand how these skills are used for safety, support, and emergency response on the trail.
Throughout the day, participants also learned about:
- Planning and preparation
- Physical and mental fitness
- Trail ethics
- Climbing essentials
- Camp management and site selection
The rotational format encouraged cooperation, patience, and shared responsibility, allowing learners to support one another while gaining confidence in each skill area. Parents and senior scouts played an important role in guiding and reinforcing lessons, making the experience truly intergenerational.
The Basic Mountaineering Course served as a crucial prerequisite for the Viperโs Peak Hike on November 22, 2025, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills needed to approach the hike safely and responsibly.
By the end of the day, participants walked away better preparedโnot only for the upcoming hike, but for future outdoor experiences as well. The BSP Basic Mountaineering Course was a meaningful day of learning, practice, and growth, strengthening both skills and community bonds.
