BSP First Aid and Disaster Preparedness Training by the Philippine Red Cross
Mud, Maps, and First Aid: My LHN Boy Scout Training Experience
On October 18th, I had my Boy Scout training at Victor’s Estate Basketball Court in Buhangin. I left home at 8:26 a.m., but the motorcyclist I hired took a detour through Jade Valley, causing the motorcycle to slip in the mud. I managed to jump off in time, but was partially covered in mud by the time I arrived.
The training, led by the Philippine Red Cross Davao City Chapter, focused on First Aid and Disaster Preparedness, which felt especially relevant due to recent local calamities and what happened to me in the morning with the motorcycle. It was a strong reminder that being prepared can save lives, not only our own but also those of others.
Even though most of us are homeschoolers, learning survival and first aid skills is essential, especially when disaster strikes unexpectedly. We learned various first aid techniques, like using neckerchiefs as bandages, applying pressure to wounds, and creating improvised stretchers. We also practiced responding to injuries during drills, earning points for correct actions. They reminded us never to assume an injury isn’t serious just because it doesn’t bleed, and to always call for help when needed.
There were 29 Boy Scouts, including me, and 7 Senior Scouts who guided us through the drills.
After learning the techniques, the Red Cross trainers tested us by letting each group perform first aid on “patients” (our fellow scouts). Though my group didn’t win, we gained valuable knowledge and had fun.
Despite the rough start that morning, the day turned out to be one of the most meaningful I’ve had as a Scout. The day, despite its rocky start, was a meaningful experience that reminded me of the importance of being prepared in case of disasters.
We thanked God for the opportunity and protection throughout the day. When natural disasters strike, being prepared isn’t just about badges or activities – it’s about having the courage, knowledge, and heart to be of help to others.
